Property Description
A real piece of Mother Lode history, the famous Virginia Mine on 91 acres, located four miles south of Coulterville on Highway 49 North. Originally called the Captain Aiken Mine, this is another early hard rock mine. Between 1850 and the 1950s, it produced over $660,000 in gold from its 1300’ inclined shaft. Total production amounted to $824,000. It is one of the earliest patented mines in the state and had a 10-stamp mill on site. The mine has been closed for many years and the opening has caved in. There are several of the old original buildings on the property and a large metal building built in the 1980’s when Pegasus leased the property for exploration. There are several other buildings that have been vandalized and are given no value. Zoning is Mountain Preserve and mining is a permitted use. The property backs up against 2,835 acres of BLM land that stretches all the way to Lake McClure. The history of the mine is found in the CA Journal of Mining and Geology Volume 53 Numbers 1 and 2, January – April 1957. This is an estate sale. Property is being sold 'AS IS". Estate will not participate in any tests or inspections costs.
